Encouraging Women to Live Rooted in the Sacred

Letting Go of Clutter and Holding On to Peace

The Carolina clay has housed our family roots for over a decade now, but prior to settling here, we moved many times across many years.

As exhausting as those moves were, they lent timely opportunities to shed excess belongings.

Yet, as we settled into longterm living, I began to sense an unexpected weight of weariness. Amidst the bustle of a growing family, without those frequent moves forcing fresh starts, I felt overwhelmed by the re-accumulated stuff of life and the stress of tidying around it.

I’d spend all my energy managing the low-hanging fruit of daily maintenance, never feeling like I could get ahead. I longed to rise above the waves of upkeep and excess surrounding me, yet I’d collapse into bed each night, sinking farther into the floodwaters of inadequacy.

Quieting my environment helps quiet my spirit, yet my environment felt like a thundering flood of chaos. Feelings of failure, fault, weakness, and regret stole my very peace. Yet, I had no idea how to summon the time and energy to change it.

One evening, as I searched scripture for a hint of calm in the chaos, God brought me to Psalm 29. David wrote this Psalm while watching a storm rise above the Mediterranean Sea and sweep across the land.

I felt like I was swirling in my own personal storm and these words spoke hope and comfort to my weary soul: “The LORD rules over the floodwaters. The LORD reigns as king forever. The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace. (Psalm 29:10-11, NLT)

God reminded me that night that He rules over every storm of life, offering us His strength and peace in the midst.

I knew something needed to change, so I prayed for wisdom to create boundaries and freedom to let go of clutter that no longer served us. And one small step at a time, I began moving toward a life of less stuff and more peace.

Friend, if life feels like it’s swirling around you, creating whirlwinds of chaos in your home—take heart; there is hope! God is more than able to meet you where you are with His abundant strength, for He rules over the floodwaters of your storm and longs to bless you with His peace.

Some suggestions for you as you seek to declutter and restore order in your home:

  • Lay your struggles bare before God. Ask Him to guide you toward His best for your household. “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are my God and my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25:5, NIV
  • If you live with others, brainstorm ways you can work together toward balance. “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” Ecclesiastes 4:9, NLT
  • Evaluate your schedule. Is there anything you’re saying yes to that’s sapping time and energy, contributing to the overwhelm of your current season? “Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow.” Psalm 25:4, NIV
  • Break down big tasks into small goals. Don’t discount the big difference small efforts can make. “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin…” Zechariah 4:10a, NLT.
  • The less you have, the less you have to manage. Consider how much stuff you want to manage and donate the rest to someone who needs it. “All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.” Acts 4:32, NLT
  • Don’t let one difficult day derail your progress. Accept God’s grace for the process and begin each day anew. “The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” Lamentations 3:22-23, NLT

Sweet friend, your desire for a manageable home is a worthy desire. Today is a great day to begin anew and, one step at a time with God, create the calm your heart craves for your home.

What small step can you take today to bring more order and peace to your home?
We’d love for you to join the conversation in the comments over at Proverbs 31 Ministries! ♥

Thank you Brenda for your sharing I have been overwhelmed for such a long long time with my clutter. I find it difficult to let go of stuff as I am such a sentimental person and having shifted countries I find it even more difficult , it is like I am holding onto my life. I have also lost me baby daughter and so I haven’t had the courage to let go of her things. Your sharing has told me to ask God to help me which I never even thought of before as nobody seems to want to share my burden. I have known for a long time that something needs to change. I will take heed of your steps and with the help of our Lord try again. Thank you so much for sharing and thanks to God for putting this in my path to read. Blessings Crystal

Bless you, Crystal. I’m so sorry for your loss. Praying for you now, sister. I can only imagine how difficult it is to want to hold onto sacred parts of your life through the things that remind you of those times and places. Every small step is progress; it’s okay to move toward peace at a pace that honors your heart. So glad you’re beginning that path, sister, for the peace and freedom found on it are worth it. Thank you for reaching out and sharing today. Praying for you; may the Lord bring His abundant peace to your heart and life this year, sweet sister. 🙏🏻 💗

Friend, are you like me & feeling a little disconn Friend, are you like me & feeling a little disconnected after these last two years of social distancing. If so, I understand. 💗
.
In today’s devotion over at Proverbs 31 Ministries, I share of a time when I felt unknown by the community around me, as well as a current feeling of disconnection the last couple of socially-distanced years have brought.
.
So thankful we have a God who knows us through-and-through, and who walks with us in every season of our lives. 🙌
.
As we all begin to take awkward steps toward re-establishing in-person connections this year, May we never forget how very *known,* and *loved* by God we are.
.
Oh, that we would find our greatest comfort & community in Him. 💗

Friend,I wonder if you’re like me in that, so of Friend,I wonder if you’re like me in that, so often I’d rather show up on the scene of everyday life after I have things figured out…after I have my stuff together.
.
But, I’m learning that the Figuring-Out comes with the Showing-Up.
.
For when we come as we are to the table of life, our place finds us.
.
We need not concern ourselves with what others might say, nor worry about who seems more qualified than us.
.
For we aren’t defined by anyone else’s standard of being. We are beautifully made for purpose—just as we are.
.
Everyday, every year, every decade of life, we’ll grow. But may we not wait till we feel comfortable or confident or have it all figured out (as if) to step into the things God places on our hearts.
.
For the beauty is in showing up & making much of Him.
.
Good news, it’s not about us! 🙌
.
Simply come as you are. 💗
